My name is Brian Watson, and I am running to be your next state treasurer. I grew up on the Western Slope of Colorado in the small town of Olathe and have lived in Colorado ever since then. From a young age, I learned the value of hard work and caring for my neighbors. I am grateful for my family and the people in my community that shaped me into who I am today. They instilled in me a heart to serve others, and that's why I am running to serve the people of Colorado now.
My educational and professional background is in commercial real estate, where I have made it my life's goal to empower others and build bridges of understanding among diverse groups of people. Our company turns vacant and distressed properties back into usable and productive spaces. We transform many of the buildings we acquire into schools, to create educational choice and excellence. My extensive experience in finance and investment, leading others in a fiduciary role, makes me uniquely qualified to serve as state treasurer of Colorado.
Our state faces immense challenges in PERA and putting our state back on a path to financial stability. If we do not come together on the big issues we face, our entire state will suffer. Politicians in the state Legislature have made PERA a political punching bag, choosing partisan politics over real solutions for our teachers and first responders. We have a promise to keep to them, and a promise to keep to the taxpayers. This is not a partisan issue, this is a people issue.
One of my first goals will be to sit down with every board member of PERA for lunch or coffee and get to know them as people. We must create relationships and be willing to listen to one another to have any chance to solve the problems we face with PERA. I will work with the state legislature to find solutions that don't involve doubling the sales tax like my opponent has proposed. I believe that we can find better investment opportunities and returns, in addition to other compromises, so that we find a solution that works for all Coloradans. While PERA will be my first priority, I am committed to fulfilling all of the Constitutional duties of the state treasurer.
For too long, politicians and the media have tried to divide us based on race, gender, class and political background. This election isn't about party, and it isn't about dividing us. This election is about people and ideas. My experience working with and for others and being responsible for others' money, gives me a unique perspective that my opponent doesn't have. My solutions are forward-looking and people-driven, while my opponent is recycling the same talking points that he has used to become a career politician. My campaign has wide bipartisan support from community and business leaders because I'm not looking for my next political job. I have pledged to not take a salary from the government in order to reduce the burden of government and set a precedent that every dollar matters. My promise is to be a steward of your money, not take more of it.
Our state needs an outsider with the background and experience to lead us in a more sustainable financial direction, but it also needs someone with the passion and drive to serve. I have spent my life building bridges and creating opportunity for others, and I would be honored have the opportunity to serve each of you, the people of Colorado.
